Living Your Life's True Purpose

#goals #travel lifestyle yoga Oct 04, 2021

Have you ever wondered what your true purpose is? Have you ever felt like there was something more to life, but weren't sure what it was? Many people find themselves asking these questions at some point in their lives. The truth is that many of us are living our lives without understanding the full potential of who we are and how amazing this world can be.

This blog article, based on episode 044 of The Mind Your Body Show with Yoga_Kaja, will explore why so many of us feel this way, as well as provide tips on how to figure out one's true purpose! It was so inspiring chatting with Kaja in such a refreshing way.

I get my long-service leave at the end of this year as a teacher and my plan is to take it at half-pay over 6 months. I already had some plans for how I would take that leave but this chat was very thought-provoking in how best I can use that time, specifically when Kaja asked, “If you could not worry about money, what would you do?”.

We all want to do what we love, yet how many of us actually are? The first step in living your life’s true purpose is asking yourself what you love to do — what you would do if you didn’t need to worry about money. Then, I believe it’s about asking ‘how’. In my experience, most people forget this. They discover what they want to do, but they forget (or don’t know) about asking how they want to do it. The how is just as important as the what.

There were so many nuggets of gold from this episode with Kaja. From living your life’s true purpose to the many benefits of incorporating yoga into your life, here are 4 of my biggest takeaways from the episode.

"Practice implies that you can always develop further."

My Biggest Takeaways

If you could not worry about money what would you do? If you could pay yourself for the next 5 months, consider what you would do. However you would spend your time irrespective of income is your life’s true purpose. This type of life is possible. You could be offered a redundancy like Kaja, or you could save the money. Either way, it is possible and it starts with knowing what you would do.

Throw out societal norms and do what you actually like. It might sound a bit morbid, but no one knows exactly how long they’re going to live; so if you died tomorrow, would you be happy living this life? If the answer isn’t a resounding yes, consider what you actually like.

The significance behind the terminology of "practice" in yoga. One of the things I like most about yoga is the terminology. When you hear people speak about training, they usually use terminology like “doing”. However, when you hear yogi’s talk about yoga, they usually use terms like “practice”. Practice implies that you can always develop further.

The compelling reasons you need yoga in your life. Oftentimes people get into yoga for the physical benefits — they are tight or injured and want or need to improve their physical body — but it’s the emotional benefits that will keep you coming back. Yoga is so big; the more you get into it, the more you realise how much there is to it. From the philosophy and history to the yoga sutras and ethical parts, you can never learn everything about yoga.

The first step in living your life’s true purpose is to establish what you want to do. Then, it’s to discover how you want to do that. My biggest takeaways from this episode were discovering what you would do if you didn’t need to worry about money, why throwing out societal norms is important  if it means you get to do what you actually like, the significance of using the word “practice”, and the compelling reasons you need yoga in your life.

What do you think constitutes living one's purpose?

I’d love to know what your biggest takeaway was too.
